Rapid Innovation
2021 was a record-breaking year for venture capital investment in technology, and 2022 proved to be a watershed year for tech breakthroughs and challenges with broad societal impacts. While innovation is here to stay and has the potential to enhance human flourishing, rapid innovation poses evolving risks and challenges.

Venture Capital and ESG
To date, ESG metrics have been slow to be adopted by venture capital.  This is partly due to the early and evolving nature of their investments combined with minority ownership and the complexity of adapting regulations and frameworks to early-stage ventures.

Streamlined Metrics
Through working groups and interviews conducted over the last year with venture capital teams, limited partners, and founders, we have concluded that there is a need for a streamlined set of metrics to enable fund managers to get started with ESG while fostering transparency and comparable data for industry-wide benchmarking.

About ESG4VC

ESG4VC was launched informally in July 2020 by US venture capitalists and advisors with experience in investment banking, management consulting, environmental science, education, technology, academia, and nonprofit organizations.

We met monthly to share research, tools, and examples before receiving grant funding from Luminate, part of the Omidyar Network, in late 2022 to formalize an organization that supports venture capital firms and startups with ESG.

Having experienced the challenges of ESG integration in venture capital, we decided to bring our collective perspectives together and create the tools for others interested in getting started or deciding on the next steps.
